How do I find someone for personal training? 

Finding a personal trainer on Google will be easy, but finding someone QUALIFIED in your goal area who you "mesh" well with can be a bit more challenging!

 

1. Make sure to set up a 15-20 minute Zoom call with your trainer before starting your training. You want to make sure that you "jive" well with your trainer! People can have glaring personality traits and quirks that may put you off from training. You do not have to justify your reasons to yourself - sometimes, it just isn't a good fit! 

2. Make sure they are knowledgeable in your goal area. They could hold a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science, but have no knowledge on how to get an athlete ready for a marathon!

Are you interested in weight loss?

Are you looking to get stronger?

Do you want to improve your mobility? 

These are all niche areas of fitness that will benefit you having someone who is well versed in their field.

3. Does your time schedule work together? If you are only available early mornings, but are interviewing an evening trainer, you are just wasting your time. Make sure you find someone who trains when you are available, and be up front about if you want to travel to their studio, or have virtual sessions. Some trainers will even travel to your home for an additional charge!

4. Speak up if it isn't a good fit. We are all human. If you started off strong, but feel like you have out-grown your trainer, or even just want a change of pace, speak up and let them know! The number one goal for personal trainers is to make sure you reach your goal, and feel good doing it. There will be no hard feelings, just be honest and remember, they are there for you! 

How much is a personal training session? 

Training sessions mainly vary in cost depending on a two factors: 

- Frequency trained per week (discounts for more training per week)

- Type of training (one-on-one, semi-private, small group, in home, virtual, programming only, pre-recorded sessions)

Our average client pays between $83-$200 per week for multi-day training, programming and classes. Our lowest price point would be about $24 a week, where our higher ticket items top out around $564 per week. The amazing thing I love about personal training is just that - it's PERSONAL to the client's needs, motivation, schedule and lifestyle.

 

Are personal trainers worth it? 

There's been a saying that has stuck with me from the beginning of my training career. "Don't trust a trainer that doesn't have a trainer". 

I didn't understand it at first, but I do now. 

A trainer that utilizes a trainer understands the importance of their position in someone's life. Many of the best trainers I know hire trainers to train them so they can focus on doing the hard things they may not write into a program for themselves. 

Long story short, yes, I believe that trainers are worth it. If not for motivation and programming, then for accountability, self-confidence building and community. 

Is it better to go to a personal trainer 2 or 3 times a week? 

I will say something controversial here, but I have good reason and will tell you why. All of my clients I have seen in the past decade who saw me LESS than 3x per week weren't able to see their own progress. 

There are 168 hours in a week. If you are only dedicating TWO of those hours to exercise, there is NO WAY you are going to see the difference 3 months down the line. 

That's only 3% of your week! 

Now, if you dedicate 3 days a week to your goals... that's a whopping 5% of your time spent working towards your fitness goals! It may not seem like much, but that extra 2% is the difference between giving up after 3 months or hard-charging forward into your next goal.  

Do you lose weight faster with a personal trainer? 

You will lose weight with whatever program works best for your body type. Some people do really well with cardio, other people do better losing weight through strength training. A personal trainer will have the knowledge and tools available to re-direct you if your program isn't showing the results it should. Having to figure out the correct programming on your own isn't impossible, but might not be worth the frustration and time lost. 

How much weight can you lose in 3 months with a personal trainer? 

It is safe to assume you can lose anywhere from .5-2 lbs per week when working on your nutrition, sleep and exercise routine. Depending on your body type, you can be on the higher or lower end of the spectrum. Usually about two weeks into a program, your personal trainer will re-assess your progress in order to make sure you are maximizing your weight loss! 

What happens at your first session with a personal trainer? 

You will meet with your trainer and discuss your goals, any injuries (prior or current), as well as undergo your posture assessment and schedule your InBody Scan for body fat analysis. We will also briefly discuss what your overall program is going to look like, how many days a week to work out, if there are any incorporated semi-private or group classes and set up your workout profiles. You are already on your way!  

What are the disadvantages of having a personal trainer? 

With every new change in life, there comes growth. Sometimes, growth can be uncomfortable, having to trust another person with your goals, innermost desires and telling someone your vulnerabilities. This can be slightly off-putting for some, though if you can conquer this first step, it WILL make you stronger. 

People that thrive in a personal trainer environment are:

- Willing to try new things

- Teachable

- Like to learn

- Able to acknowledge their imbalances

 - Desire one-on-one attention for form correction & personalization

Those who don't do well with personal training are: 

- People who thrive on large groups

- Unable to take responsibility for their actions

- Unwilling to make the changes necessary to get to their goals

What should I bring to a PT session? 

Wear some comfortable workout clothes! Make sure to bring water and a towel (if needed), as well as a curious mind! 

When is the best time to eat, before or after a workout? 

There is a WHOLE bunch of detail I can get into on this topic, but for the most part, I like to stick to this routine: 

4 hours prior - full meal of carbs, protein and veggies

90 min prior - workout shake + pomegranate juice

During workout - sip on water or electrolyte drink

immediately after - water, water, water! 

30-60 min after - small, light snack of protein and carbs 

Everyone is different, depending on your dietary needs, activity level, workout intensity, time of day, etc. Choose what works best for you! If you feel the best fasting before a workout, go with that! These are merely guidelines to start building your framework off of.
